We're thrilled to share the 2023 Átl'ka7tsem/Howe Sound Slhawt’/Herring Survey Report!
Slhawt’/herring not only support the local food web, but are also a culturally significant fish to the Skwxwú7mesh. Since 2021, MSI has been partnering with the Squamish Nation, Squamish Streamkeepers, John Buchanan, and many others to conduct annual surveys and share the stories of slhawt’/herring spawn in Átl'ka7tsem/Howe Sound.
This report summarizes stories and data from our 2023 survey season. This project could not have been completed without the generous support from our volunteers, staff, contractors, partners, and funders - thank you to all who were involved 💙
Highlights include:
* Slhawt’ spawn season in Átl'ka7tsem was documented to span from February 26 to April 7, 2023
* 14 locations were consistently surveyed: 7 land-based sites and 7 ocean/boat-based sites
* 724 hours spent searching for slhawt’ over 181 surveys
* Over 20 volunteers contributed their time to land-based surveys
* 2 Squamish Nation Archaeological, Cultural, Environment (ACE) Technicians and Addison Farr of Sea Dog Expeditions were contracted to help with boat-based surveys
* Observations of wildlife who feast during Tem Lhawt’ included: eagles, sea lions, seagulls, orcas, humpacks
* Students from St’a7mes School marked the return of the herring with a large community celebration

Another big girl released without leaving the drink. Life has been beyond good recently for middle bay anglers, and we have to remember to practice proper catch and release. Using proper gear is imperative as you get the fish in and off the hook as soon as possible, causing it to expend less energy. I prefer gear in the 50lb range. It lets you get the fish in quick, and the heavy fluorocarbon leader is easier to handle and much less likely to cut your fingers, allowing you to eliminate net usage altogether.
It’s hard to beat doubling up on giants with my twin. This will be my favorite fishing moment for a long, long time.

Spent the night putting fisholdskool 1/2 ounce jigs and soft plastics to work with ks_fishing89 on the Choptank. Fish almost every cast from the moment we got out there up to 30-31”, with an average of 21-22”. Nothing like catching so many fish your wrist hurts the next day!

Last weekend shooting the Canadian University Rowing Championships meant sitting in a small tin boat in the rain for 7 hours as the rowers went passed. Saturday was especially wet as the rain really came down hard. To give you an idea of how dark and rainy it was the second image was shot at ISO: 128000 / f/6.3 / 1/1000.
Mustang floater suits are absolutely essential when photographing water sports like rowing because they keep you warm, dry and most importantly safe.
Somehow the seem on the butt of my suit came apart on Saturday and I sat Sunday with a wet butt.
Not knowing what to expect as I purchased this suit from a silent auction I contacted Mustang Survival and explained the situation.
Within two days of my initial email the service rep at Mustang wrote back explaining the damage was covered and needed my address as the were going to send me a new suit which arrived today.
I never expected a new suit and have to thank Mustang for their excellent customer service and products.

In some ways, I can't believe I did it. In others, I'm thinking, "Of course I did!".
A week of RHIOT training for Coastal Nations Search and Rescue in collaboration with the coastguardcan and c.n.c.g.a ! I was so nervous for months leading up to this, but as the training progressed, I realized I had so many of these skills, I was just missing the confidence. Of course, I learned so much, too, and it was incredible to work amongst these world-class instructors and the Bamfield Coast Guard team!
