Rinsing a previously stained flotation coat under cold after spot cleaning it with dish soap and then hanging to dry

How to Clean Flotation Clothing

Grease stains happen—on deck, at the dock, or mid-repair in the middle of the ocean. To remove them, the key is to deal with them quickly without damaging the technical fabrics.

Most flotation clothing is made from nylon or polyester, which are durable but can retain oils if not treated properly. Here’s a simple, effective way to get grease out without compromising performance.

Step-by-Step: Removing Grease Stains

1. Blot, don’t rub
Start by blotting the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel. The goal is to lift as much grease as possible before it sets. Rubbing will only push it deeper into the fabric.

2. Apply dish soap
Use a small amount of liquid dish soap, something designed to cut grease. Apply it directly to the stain and gently work it in with your fingers or a soft cloth. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes to allow the oil to break down.

3. Rinse with cold water
Rinse thoroughly with cold water. Hot water can set oil stains. Make sure all soap is removed to avoid residue that can attract dirt later.

4. Check before drying
Take a close look at the area. If the stain remains, repeat the process. For stubborn spots, you can try applying simple paste by mixing equal parts water and baking soda together to help draw out any remaining oil.

5. Air dry only
Let the garment air dry completely, away from direct heat or sunlight.
